The Cornell University Board of Trustees today unanimously approved the appointment of Hunter R. Rawlings III as interim president of the university at its meeting in New York City. Rawlings, who served as Cornell's 10th president from 1995 to 2003, will serve in an interim capacity until a new president is named.

"I am honored to return and serve Cornell at this time," said Rawlings. "The university is very strong, and we have set very high aspirations. We will continue to support the academic and administrative initiatives that are in place." Commenting on the university's campaign planning, Rawlings stated, "I will be working closely with the many Cornellians whose dedication to the university sustains the momentum that is the hallmark of Cornell's leadership in higher education."

As he emerged from the board meeting, Peter C. Meinig, chairman of the Cornell Board of Trustees, said: "Hunter is the perfect leader to guide Cornell through this period. His talent, enthusiasm and proven leadership are well known to trustees, faculty, alumni and students."

Commenting on the board's action, Provost Carolyn (Biddy) Martin said, "We know what we need to do to realize the ambitious academic goals we have set for ourselves." She added, "Hunter and I have formed a great team in the past, and together with the deans, faculty and staff, we can move forward with confidence in all the constituent parts of the university."

Antonio M. Gotto Jr., who has served as the provost of the Weill Medical College at Cornell University for the past eight years, reacted to Rawlings' assumption of the university's presidency by saying: "The board's decision will ensure a sense of continuity at this important juncture. I look forward to once again working with Hunter as we continue to enhance the connections between the New York City and Ithaca campuses."

Cornell President Jeffrey S. Lehman announced June 11 that he is stepping down as president, effective June 30. Rawlings will assume his duties July 1. Meinig will appoint a presidential search committee shortly to identify the next president of Cornell University, and the committee will begin its work promptly.
