Johnson School is top fund-raiser for children's hospital
By Linda Myers
The Johnson Graduate School of Management took first place in the first annual MBA Charity Challenge, raising $6,070 in 10 days for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The event was held Sept. 21-30.
Selling pink and blue bracelets embossed with the phrase "Helping Kids See Tomorrow," Johnson School students competed against their peers at 10 other top business schools and raised nearly triple the amount of the closest competitor, the University of Chicago business school. Also competing were business schools at Columbia, Yale, Duke (Fuqua) and Northwestern (Kellogg) universities, the universities of Michigan (Ross), Pennsylvania (Wharton) and Virginia (Darden), Dartmouth College (Tuck) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan).
In total, the initiative raised $16,426 for St. Jude Children's Hospital.
The largest childhood cancer research center in the world, the Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude hospital has played a major role in developing protocols that have increased survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to more than 70 percent. Founded by entertainer Danny Thomas, the hospital accepts all patients, regardless of families' ability to pay.
