President Rawlings announces Feb. 28 discussion for Cornellians concerned by stabbing

Cornell President Hunter R. Rawlings will host an informal discussion for concerned members of the Cornell community on Tuesday, Feb. 28, to address issues of concern and other responses to this past weekend's campus stabbing incident. The open discussion is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Memorial Room of Willard Straight Hall.

The announcement was made in Rawlings' message to the campus community, e-mailed campuswide on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and posted on the President's Web site at http://www.cornell.edu/president/announcement_2006_0222.cfm. Rawlings had posted an earlier message to the Cornell community on Monday, Feb. 20.

Nathan Poffenbarger, the Cornell student charged in the Feb. 18 incident, was temporarily suspended from Cornell, effective Feb. 18, pending a full hearing on the merits of the case. The Cornell judicial administrator will pursue the matter through the campus disciplinary process, once the criminal matter has been resolved. The Cornell University Police also has issued a directive that bars Poffenbarger from the campus.

In addition to next Tuesday's open discussion hosted by the president, the Division of Student and Academic Services already has hosted several requested community support meetings on campus, focusing on issues arising from the stabbing incident. Also, Campus Life and the Resident Hall Association are holding an informational meeting and discussion tonight, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m. at Noyes Center. And Omega Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and Ujaama Residential College are hosting a community forum on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 8:30 p.m. at the Townhouse Community Center. In addition, students from Watermargin Cooperative and Cook House have planned a rally for Monday, Feb. 27, from 11: 30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Ho Plaza.
