Computerworld ranks CU as one of top 100 IT workplaces

Computerworld, a leading trade magazine for information technology, has placed Cornell on its list of Best Places to Work in IT, in its June 18 online issue.
Computerworld's 14th annual survey put Cornell in the 40th spot, using benchmarks ranging from employees' salary satisfaction to opportunities for growth and development. Only three universities made the list. The survey reflects only information about Cornell Information Technologies (CIT), Cornell's centralized IT unit that employs about 390 people.
Linda Croll Howell, director of human resources and organizational development at CIT, said she was thrilled the department was included on Computerworld's list, considering the competition, and the fact that it was their first time filling out the survey.
"We want to be No. 1 on the list," Howell said.
In its description of Cornell, Computerworld highlighted CIT's programs for employee development and training.
"This Ivy League university ... budgets $2,500 per employee for development each year," the section reads. "Employees have access to Cornell's degree programs for free, and a new Technology Scholarship Program provides an extra $2,500 in funding for classes or conferences not within an employee's immediate technological area."
Computerworld surveyed more than 27,000 IT workers to compile its 100-best list. Employees, according to the survey, viewed "working in a challenging and enjoyable environment" as the second-most important aspect of their jobs, right after the desire to be fairly compensated.
Topics on the 100-question survey included average salary and bonus increases, percentage of IT staffers promoted, IT staff turnover rates, training and development programs, and percentages of women and minorities in IT staff and management positions.
About a third of CIT employees at Cornell filled out the survey, according to Howell. She was quick to point out that the employees are what make CIT a positive work environment.
"These are by far the most dedicated, passionate and wonderful employees I've ever worked with," Howell said. "The people here really care, and care about doing a good job."
