Extension advocate Bruce Wilkins dies at 76

Bruce Tabor Wilkins Sr., Cornell professor emeritus of natural resources, died June 30 at age 76 from complications related to a stroke.

A specialist in fish and wildlife management, Wilkins was very involved in Cooperative Extension and influenced how extension work is conceived and conducted, both in New York state and nationally.

Born June 21, 1931, in Greenport, N.Y., Wilkins earned a B.S. in wildlife management at Cornell in 1954 and then served with the U.S. Army in Korea. After his discharge, he earned a master's degree at Montana State University in Bozeman in 1956, returning to Cornell in 1963 to earn his doctorate. In 1967 he joined the faculty in the Department of Natural Resources, where he taught and engaged in extension and research activities until his illness in 2005, earning the title of professor emeritus in 1997.

His professional interests included Sea Grant extension, resource management policy, human dimensions of natural resource management and management of fisheries in developing countries. In 1998 he received the William O. Wick Leadership Award from the Assembly of Sea Grant Extension Program Leaders, and in 2002 he was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Alumni Association of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Enevoldsen Wilkins of Solomons, Md., and extended family.
