Three law faculty members awarded endowed Clarke chairs

Cornell Law School faculty experts in comparative law, Far East legal studies and feminist jurisprudence have been awarded endowed Clarke chairs by the Cornell University Board of Trustees.

Mitchel Lasser, an authority on comparative and international law, has been named the first Jack G. Clarke Professor of Law. Annelise Riles, director of the Clarke Program in East Asian Law and Culture, has been named the first holder of the Jack G. Clarke Chair in Far East Legal Studies. And Cynthia Grant Bowman, who specializes in feminist jurisprudence, has been named the Dorothea S. Clarke Professor of Law, previously held by Professor Martha Fineman.

All three of the chairs are funded by gifts from Jack G. Clarke, LLB '52, and his wife, Dorothea.

"The Clarkes' support has been transformative for Cornell Law School," says Peter Cronin, the school's associate dean for alumni affairs and development. "One of the core strengths of the Law School is its faculty. Dean Stewart Schwab's ability to attract, retain and recognize extraordinary individuals like Professors Bowman, Lasser and Riles would simply not be possible if not for the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Clarke."
