Writers to discuss writing careers and craft
By Daniel Aloi
Three alumni fiction writers will discuss their careers Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall.
The panel discussion, "FlashForward: Cornell Writers Return," will feature Junot Díaz, M.F.A. '95, whose 2007 debut novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction; Melissa Bank, M.F.A. '88 ("The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing") and Julie Schumacher, M.F.A. '86 ("Black Box").
The writers will talk about their individual career journeys as well as their craft.
Bank, Diaz and Schumacher also will read from their work that evening in a Creative Writing Centennial Reading, 7:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium in Rockefeller Hall.
Both events are free and open to the public.
The panel discussion and reading will follow a day of events Feb. 19. Díaz gave a brief reading at the Johnson Museum of Art and received the Eissner Artist of the Year Award; and a panel discussion on immigration and the arts was held with Díaz and Cornell faculty members Amy Villarejo, Ernesto Quiñonez, Sofia Villenas and Roberto Sierra.
The events were co-sponsored by Creative Writing, English, Latino Studies and the Cornell Council for the Arts.
