2009-10 theater season promises comedy, classics

Cornell's Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts 2009-10 season begins in September with "A Servant of Two Masters," Carlo Goldini's 1753 romantic comedy filled with physical humor and identity switching. In October the center hosts the regional premiere of the Lee Blessing play "Nine People Dancing to Good Country Music." This madcap visit to a backcountry bar is filled with guffaws and surprises. And in November, a contemporary look at Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" explores eternal, universal questions of revenge, love and forgiveness.

February features "Soirée/Cabaret!," a world premiere combining music, laughter and political commentary; and Neil Simon's "Biloxi Blues." The season concludes with a new adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher of the biting satire "The Government Inspector," written in 1835 by Nikolai Gogol.

On Dec. 12-13 the Schwartz Center will present "It's a Wonderful Life -- A Radio Play" with more than 30 characters. Although not part of the theater season subscription package, subscribers will have the opportunity to pre-buy this show and reserve the best seats with their subscription package.

A six-show season costs as little as $40. Purchase a subscription to the Schwartz Center between Feb. 2 and April 26 to be automatically entered into a raffle with the opportunity to win a 32-inch LCD HDTV, an iPod 8g Nano and a free subscription to the 2010-11 subscription season.
