Students from South Africa visit campus

Alvin Bhengu, center, a freshman from the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein, South Africa, discusses the differences in South African and American cultures following a performance by the Ordinary People student theater troupe, Oct. 5 in Willard Straight Hall. Luther Marais, right, also a UFS freshman, and Sarah Bennedsen '14, left, a member of Ordinary People, listen in.

Nine UFS students visited Cornell Sept. 26-Oct. 6 as part of their university's Leadership for Change program, which sent 80 students to visit foreign universities for immersion in other cultures. The visits are intended to expose South African undergraduates to new interracial and multicultural environments, and to foster ideas and new perspectives the students might use for change when they return home.

The performance by Ordinary People was among many events, discussions and lectures the UFS students participated in while staying on campus.
