Mark Bain, an aquatic biologist and associate professor of natural resources at Cornell University, has been named director of the university's Center for the Environment (CfE). Effective Feb. 24,. Bain succeeds Acting Director Max Pfeffer, professor of rural sociology, who was named associate director of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station in 2001. Announcing the appointment, Susan A. Henry, the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said: "Mark brings to the Center for the Environment a fresh perspective on the integration of research, education and outreach that our college endorses and values. His extensive knowledge of environmental policies and issues are essential for the promotion of a sustainable relationship between the environment and a quality life for people here and around the world." The Cornell Board of Trustees will meet in Ithaca on March 26 and 27. The board will meet from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and again from 2 to 4 p.m. on March 27, in the Trustee Meeting Room of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.
Engaged Cornell - a groundbreaking, $150 million, 10-year initiative to establish community engagement and real-world learning experiences as the hallmark of the Cornell undergraduate experience - was launched Oct. 6.
Cornell will receive $25 million from the state's Gen*NY*sis biotechnology economic development program as a major share of the cost of constructing the university's Life Science Technology Building.
