ITHACA, N.Y. -- New technology being developed at Cornell University could bring multimedia communications to your desktop computer a lot sooner -- and at a much lower cost -- than anyone expected. Cornell is testing an idea called "Cells in Frames," which allows computer data to be transmitted over existing computer networks via a system called Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), without expensive new hardware at each workstation. ATM is a way of sending data faster and more smoothly, designed to carry audio and video as well as text. Cornell will use the new system at first to replace its existing campus telephone system with computer telephony.

ITHACA, NY -- What's 120 feet long, weighs 127 tons, and connects central campus and north campus at Cornell University? It's the new footbridge overlooking Triphammer Falls, Beebe Lake and Fall Creek, and it will be placed in service beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. The old span, which was closed in the summer of 1995 because structural components had deteriorated, has been completely rebuilt at a cost of $782,000. The original footbridge was designed to be a temporary span, but remained in use for about 35 years.
A replica trolley-bus was unveiled to the media and several local dignitaries in a ceremony at the Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit facility today. The trolley will be on public display in "bank alley" on the Ithaca Commons, Saturday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Researchers in Civil and Environmental Engineering and other disciplines are helping New York state address a broad range of transportation problems. The three-year contract has an anticipated budget of $1 million per year.
