Richard Hanna tours synchrotron

Richard Hanna, Republican candidate for the 24th Congressional District, visited Cornell May 13 for a tour of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Sol Gruner, director of CHESS, explains to Hanna the next-generation light source technology being developed at CHESS called the Energy Recovery Linac. The prototype technology is being developed with funding from the National Science Foundation and New York state. X-ray beams produced by the new source will be about 1,000 times better in brightness, coherence and pulse duration than currently possible.
