July 22 workshop is aimed at germinating an interest in youth gardening
By Blaine Friedlander
Interest in gardening will germinate at a Cornell University workshop July 22 at the Schurman Hall/Education Center (Cornell Veterinary College). The workshop's theme is "Cultivating Community Through Youth Gardening."
The workshop is designed to show teachers, parents, community leaders, horticulturists and other adults how to teach young people about gardening as a way of connecting with their community, as well as to create an awareness of good nutrition.
In the afternoon, participants will learn to design historic theme gardens and to start a community gardening program. They also will tour a local greenhouse.
Registration fee is $75. (After July 1, the fee is $85.) The registration fee includes a visitor parking pass, admission to all workshops, afternoon options, lunch, bagel breakfast and breaks. The workshop is sponsored by Cornell's departments of Fruit and Vegetable Science and of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture, the Cornell Plantations, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the New York Kids Growing Food Project.
