Kathy Zoner is new chief of Cornell University Police
Kathy Zoner, an 18-year veteran of the Cornell University Police, was sworn in as chief of the force Nov. 4 by outgoing Chief Curtis S. Ostrander.
Zoner is the first woman to serve as chief at Cornell.
"Kathy Zoner is a superb leader and brings strong managerial experience and deep knowledge of police work to her new post. Cornell Police duties range from the routine to planning for visits from heads of state to handling tragic circumstances in our campus and community," said President David J. Skorton. "And under her leadership, Cornell Police will continue its role as a national leader in campus law enforcement and safety."
Zoner has been with Cornell Police since 1991. Appointed captain and assistant director in 2005, Zoner became deputy chief in 2007 and interim chief in May 2009. She is a graduate of Ohio State University and the FBI National Academy.
"We are thrilled that Kathy Zoner has accepted the position as chief. Throughout her career, she has provided leadership for new department initiatives while building strong relationships with Cornell students, faculty and staff," said Mary Opperman, vice president for human resources. "In addition, our thanks go to our previous chief, Curt Ostrander, who retired last summer, for his fine leadership of this talented team who serve the Cornell community with such unwavering commitment."
Said Zoner: "I am thrilled with the opportunity that the university has given me, and I am proud to lead this fantastic team of law enforcement professionals as we continue our mission of service to Cornell."
