Reunion Weekend goes green, offers lectures, tours

From bird walks and lectures to wine tours, Cornell alumni from classes ending in 0 and 5 will be treated to a bevy of activities during Reunion Weekend, June 10-13.

This year, the Reunion committee has pledged to make the three-day affair a green one. Efforts include doing away with the printed schedule booklet and limiting bottled water for individual events.

Highlights of this year's reunion events are:

  • A culinary wine tour of Cayuga Lake, noon on Thursday (preregistration required).
  • Library Reunion Lecture: "The Business of Being Mark Twain," 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall.
  • "Cornell Architecture: Voices of 1965" – a documentary about the College of Architecture experience – 5 p.m. Thursday in the Statler Hotel Amphitheater.
  • "America and the World: A Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies Current Events Roundtable with Distinguished Faculty," 1 p.m. Friday, G10 Biotechnology Building.
  • Olin Lecture by Tom Peters '64, 3 p.m. Friday in Bailey Hall. Described by some as the "uber-guru" of management and inventor of the thriving "management guru industry," Peters has been one of the most widely respected analysts of business management practices since his book "In Search of Excellence" was first published in 1982.
  • Cornell University Glee Club, Chorus and Orchestra, 9 p.m. Friday, Bailey Hall. The Reunion 2010 joint concert features old and new favorites, as well as Mozart's Sinfonia concertante, K. 364, with violinist Lisa Tipton '81, who won the Mellon Foundation Grant for environmental science, and violist Desiree Elsevier '83, now a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Tickets $10.
  • State of the University address by President David Skorton, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Bailey Hall.
  • "Plates, Politics and Poverty in the 21st Century: Challenges and Lessons Learned From the Jan. 20, 2010, Haiti Earthquake Disaster," 1 p.m. Saturday, 2146 Snee Hall.
  • Cornelliana Night, 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Bailey Hall.

Beyond the traditional Reunion events, new faces and activities will also be part of this year's celebration. For the first time, the Cornell Asian Alumni Association and the Cornell Latino Alumni Association will have their own reunion events during the weekend.

In addition, alumni can participate in a new photography project sponsored by the Office of Web Communications and Alumni Affairs and Development, called "I Am Cornell," which can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/groups/iamcornell/. A booth by professional studio Laughing Penguin Photo will be in Barton Hall Friday and Saturday during alumni luncheons, as well as at the Arts Quad tent (by Sibley) from 3-6 p.m. Saturday.

Alumni are encouraged to consult http://www.alumni.cornell.edu/reunion/index.cfm for daily schedules and other information.
