Student films

The Department of Performing and Media Arts presents a free public screening of new works by student filmmakers, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in Kiplinger Theatre at the Schwartz Center.

Students will show their final projects from Introduction to 16mm and Digital Filmmaking, a creative, hands-on production course; and from Media Arts Laboratory: Culture/Cinema/Sensation II, the culmination of an intensive two-course sequence in practice and theory, exploring the arts, cinema and anthropology.

Spanish Mass

The Cornell Catholic Community hosts a Spanish Mass, Saturday, Dec. 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Anabel Taylor Chapel.

Free and open to the public, the mass is in observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe) and will be followed by a light lunch.

Sheep tale

Cornell Cinema ends the semester with “Shaun the Sheep Movie,” Dec. 11-13 in Willard Straight Theatre. The newest stop-motion animated feature from the creators of “Wallace & Gromit” and “Chicken Run” is recommended for ages 5 and up.

Tickets for the IthaKid Film Festival screening, Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m., are $5 for adults, $4 for kids age 12 and under. Other show times are Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 13 at 4:30 p.m.; $5.50 for all.

For holiday gift-giving, the Cornell Cinema Six Pass, good for six admissions, is $27 for students, $35 for senior citizens and $40 general/adults. T-shirts, snack passes and a selection of movie posters are available from the Cornell Cinema office, 104 Willard Straight Hall.

Concerto Competition

Twelve student musicians from diverse majors will participate in the 12th annual Cornell Concerto Competition, Sunday, Dec. 13 in Barnes Hall Auditorium, presented by the Department of Music.

The contestants will perform concertos on piano, violin, flute, cello, French horn and saxophone, each with an accompanist. Following the first round from 1 to 4 p.m., three to five finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges to perform at 8 p.m. in the final round. The judges are Phiroze Mehta and Shea Scruggs, MBA ’15, of the Ithaca College School of Music; and James Tapia of Syracuse University’s Setnor School of Music.

The winner of the final round will be announced that evening and will perform a concerto with the Cornell Symphony Orchestra on March 12, 2016.

Art to depart

Several fall 2015 exhibitions at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art end Sunday, Dec. 20.

On display now are “Imprint/In Print,” a survey of printmaking in the Bartels Gallery; “Huang Hsin-chien: The Inheritance;” “’So it goes’: Drawings by Kurt Vonnegut;” photography in “The City: Works from the Collection;” art by James Siena ’79 in “Labyrinthian Structures;” and film and video works by Gordon Matta-Clark ’68 in “CUTS.”

The museum is open daily (except Mondays) to the Cornell community and the public free of charge; and will be closed during the holiday week from Christmas Day through New Year’s Day.

Latin America scholars

The Latin American Studies Program (LASP) will hold its first annual conference Friday, Feb. 19, and is seeking papers and participation from Cornell faculty, staff and students involved in research and work related to any aspect of Latin America.

The event is intended as a forum to network, connect and learn about others’ research and work-in-progress. The conference program will be finalized based on feedback from interested presenters and participants. LASP welcomes suggestions for panel topics and brief (3 to 5 minutes) or longer research presentations by individuals or groups.

Employee Celebration

The Cornell Employee Celebration for staff, faculty, retirees and their families is Saturday, Jan. 23, with a community dinner and children’s activities from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Ramin Room of Bartels Hall, and admission to Big Red athletic events. Free parking is available in Hoy Garage with a Cornell ID.

The $5 ticket price for the event covers dinner and all athletic events, including the Indoor Track Upstate Challenge, all day; women’s basketball vs. Columbia University at 1 p.m.; women’s hockey vs. St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. and men’s basketball vs. Columbia at 4 p.m.


A limited number of tickets for Big Red wrestling vs. Lehigh University, at 6:30 p.m., are available by special request only.

The community dinner features chicken parmesan and baked ziti, with a vegan option available.

Fly tying workshop

Registration is open for the 22nd annual Winter Introduction to Fly Tying Workshop for youths and adults, Jan. 9 to March 5 at the Tompkins County Cooperative Extension (TCCE) Education Center, 615 Willow Ave., Ithaca. The workshop is cosponsored by the TCCE 4-H Program and the Leon Chandler-Phil Genova Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

All classes meet on Saturdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The nine two-hour sessions will have different instructors teaching the basics of tying the dry fly, wet fly, nymph and streamer patterns most effective in area waters. Tuition includes all instruction and materials; all students receive a complete fly-tying kit with vises, scissors and other tools included; tying materials and a comprehensive introductory text on fly tying.

Tuition fees are $150 for adults, $120 for ages 13-18 (partial scholarships available), $225 for combined registration (one adult, one youth).
