Eat smart
A two-day conference for educators June 10-11 at Cornell will celebrate 40 years of nutrition programming -- including the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and Eat Smart NY -- for low-income residents of New York state.
In breakout sessions, Cornell faculty and extension educators, including Jamie Dollahite, Brian Wansink and Jennifer Wilkins, will discuss such topics as farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture, hunger in developing countries, sustainable agriculture, food mapping and the relationship between a healthy diet and economic development.
Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Kenneth Moritsugu, chairman of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute, and Evelyn Crayton of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will deliver the conference keynote and capnote addresses. The event is sponsored by the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Science and of Human Ecology, the Division of Nutritional Sciences and Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Harvest the wind
Cornell will host a scientific workshop on gathering wind energy, "Large-Scale Wind-Generated Power," June 12-13 in Hollister and Kimball halls.
The workshop will explore wind-power issues and obstacles -- including the effects on birds and bats, noise, aesthetics, cost and overhauling the national power grid -- to the U.S. Department of Energy's goal of obtaining 20 percent of the nation's electricity from wind power by the year 2030, or 20 times the current production.
International experts scheduled to speak include Robert Thomas, Cornell professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Lord Julian Hunt of University College, London, who will give the plenary lecture on the effects of climate change on wind power, June 13 at 4:30 p.m. in B-11 Kimball Hall.
