Climbing competition benefits low-income youths

Sixty rock climbers went to new heights Nov. 2 in a rock climbing competition that raised $650 to benefit the local nonprofit OURS & YOURS Youth Organization.

The Cornell Outdoor Education's Intercollegiate Rock Climbing Competition at the Lindseth Climbing Wall in Bartels Hall was organized by student climbing instructors from Cornell Outdoor Education. Its three divisions -- beginner, intermediate and advanced -- challenged climbers with short rock climbing problems that had various point values.

OURS (Opportunity Understanding Respect Success) & YOURS (Youth Outreach Undergraduates Reshaping Success) is a Cornell student organization that serves low-income youth, most of them living in mobile home parks. Started in 2005 by a local Cornell student, Jessica Houle '08, who grew up in Conger's mobile home park in Freeville, N.Y., the organization provides opportunities for youth living in mobile home parks in surrounding areas to participate in one-on-one mentoring, experiential learning, team building, leadership development, community service, field trips, gardening, cooking and other noncompetitive activities designed to build on 4-H skills and development strengths. About 35 youths are now enrolled in the program.
