Cornell Chronicle offers new options in news delivery

Aug. 21 will usher in a new era in the way the Cornell Chronicle delivers news to the campus and beyond.

On that date the Chronicle's first weekly e-newsletter will arrive in inboxes of faculty, staff and students. For those who prefer to read their news on paper, a printer-friendly digest will be available for weekly download at Chronicle Online.

"The Cornell Chronicle is a key player in our work to tell the story of Cornell," said Tommy Bruce, vice president for university communications. "Now, the Chronicle staff is poised to leverage technology to reach even more people when and how they want -- on the Web, by e-mail and print on demand. This is an exciting new chapter for the Chronicle."

Chronicle Online will continue to be updated daily with research news, features on programs and people, coverage of campus events, staff-related news, opinion pieces and photo essays; and readers can subscribe to receive stories in 17 subject areas via e-mail or add nine different RSS feeds to their news readers.

"Both the weekly newsletter and Cornell Chronicle digest will offer a snapshot of the week's news," said Karen Walters, director of the Cornell Chronicle. "The newsletter will highlight top stories, upcoming events, athletics and Cornellians in the news, as well as feature a video from CornellCast.

"The Cornell Chronicle newspaper has evolved into a printer-friendly digest that will feature much the same content as the former tabloid," Walters added. "We will continue to publish such popular features as The Essentials; Things to Do; and the weekly Focus pages, which package stories about learning and teaching, social sciences, alumni, technology, Cornell's programs and activities in New York City, and international initiatives."

While the eight-page Cornell Chronicle is formatted as a pdf for printing on 8.5x11-inch paper, multiple copies can be ordered online through Cornell Digital Print Services at http://bigredprint.cornell.edu/order_chron.html. There, the Cornell Chronicle will be printed on 11x17-inch paper, folded in half. Pick up or free delivery will be available. Copies are available in black and white (25 cents each) or color (99 cents each). A list of other Cornell-approved vendors is available at http://www.purchasing.cornell.edu/Printing.cfm. In addition, the Cornell Chronicle, printed in black and white, is available by subscription for $50 a year. For details, contact Aggie Binger at 607-255-3637 or akm4@cornell.edu.

For those who prefer to read the Cornell Chronicle pdf on their computers, each story will link to the full article and photographs at Chronicle Online.

The Cornell Chronicle began 40 years ago as a weekly newspaper delivered to campus newsstands. Chronicle Online has an archive of stories -- organized chronologically and by category -- dating back to 1996. The move to go exclusively online will save more than 19 tons of paper a year.

"By taking advantage of technology and offering the Cornell Chronicle as print-on-demand, we are better able to reach our readers and support President David Skorton's sustainability and cost-savings goals," Walters said.
