A barge-based crane arrives at the Cornell NYC Tech construction site on Roosevelt Island.

Earlier this month, construction of the Cornell NYC Tech campus began on Roosevelt Island.

The project commenced just weeks after Cornell signed the lease with New York City that made the land transfer for the new campus official. The first steps included completion of test borings, the arrival of the first barge to transport construction materials, and construction of a site fence.

The project will involve demolition of Goldwater Memorial Hospital, which could take up to a year to finish.

The barging of construction materials – currently the largest voluntary barging program in New York City – is being managed by Don Jon Marine Co.

The new campus is on track to open in summer 2017. A construction website will provide updates.
