Bain

Mark B. Bain, professor of systems ecology in Cornell's Department of Natural Resources in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, died Feb. 8 at the age of 56.

Bain, who lived in Lansing, N.Y., and formerly lived in Brooktondale, focused his research on aquatic systems, which took him all over the world. His publications included research on fish and macroinvertebrates in fresh water and estuaries, ecosystem analyses and assessment, and restoration of species and habitats. Most recently, he was focusing on coastal ecosystems, ecology of fishes, restoration of waterways, and pathogens in the Great Lakes.

Born April 11, 1955, in Gary, Ind., Bain earned his bachelor's degree at West Virginia University (1977), master's at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1980) and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (1984); he joined the Cornell faculty in 1991.

He was a member of the American Fisheries Society, the Ecological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and he published more than 100 scientific articles. He was the recipient of numerous awards.

Bain is survived by his wife, Jane (Barden), his parents, two sons and numerous other family members.
