Police officers graduate from academy at top of their class
By Lt. Philip D. Mospan
Cornell Police Officers Michael Meskill and Michael Scott received multiple class recognition awards at the graduation of the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy's 28th session of the New York State Basic Course for Police Officers (BCPO), held last spring, Jan. 17-May 25. The graduation ceremony for 13 officers was held Oct. 24 at Corning Community College, the sponsoring affiliate of the law enforcement academy.
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services mandates that all police officers meet the 50th percentile of the Cooper Physical Fitness Standard for their age and gender to satisfy the physical training requirement of the BCPO. Meskill was recognized with the highest rating of physical fitness in the class, hitting the 97th percentile.
Scott was recognized with both the academic award and the firearms marksmanship award for recording the highest scores of his class in both categories.
Both officers were also cited with leadership awards from the academy.
Meskill and Scott had been appointed by Cornell Police Jan. 3, before the academy. Afterward, they completed the Cornell Police 16-week field training and evaluation program to finish their basic training requirements.
Prior to their appointments, Meskill earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Keuka College and Scott earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Liberty University.
Philip Mospan is an administrative lieutenant and coordinator of the Office of Professional Development and Crime Prevention Unit, Cornell University Police.
