3 faculty inducted into 2025 Class of AIMBE College of Fellows
The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has announced the induction of three Cornell Engineering faculty to its 2025 College of Fellows.
Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to medical and biological engineers, comprised of the top 2% of engineers in these fields. College membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering and medicine research, practice or education” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering or developing and implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education.”
Fellows were nominated, reviewed and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for the following specific contributions to the field:
Ilana Brito, associate professor, Mong Family Sesquicentennial Faculty Fellow in Biomedical Engineering in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, “for pioneering technologies to track horizontal gene transfer within the human gut microbiome to better understand spread of antibiotic resistance.”
Iwijn De Vlaminck, associate professor in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, “for pioneering contributions to precision medicine, development and translation of liquid biopsy and spatial omics methods for infection and immunity.”
Krystyn Van Vliet, professor in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and vice president for innovation and external engagement strategy at Cornell, “for pioneering mechanics-based methods to elucidate cell-material interactions, and for international technology translation toward development and manufacturing of therapies.”
A formal induction ceremony was held during the AIMBE Annual Event at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, on March 31. The three Cornell faculty members were inducted along with 171 colleagues who make up the AIMBE College of Fellows Class of 2025.
AIMBE Fellows are among the most distinguished medical and biological engineers including three Nobel Prize laureates and 22 Presidential Medal of Science or Technology and Innovation awardees. Additionally, 214 fellows have been inducted to the National Academy of Engineering, 117 inducted to the National Academy of Medicine, and 48 inducted to the National Academy of Sciences.
