Exhausted farmers need a break from pitching hay, milking and other chores

Cornell Cooperative Extension in St. Lawrence County, is seeking volunteer mechanics to help repair and keep generators running on dairy farms.

Mechanics who are able to volunteer their services are urged to call Nancy Webster of Cornell Cooperative Extension in St. Lawrence County at (315) 386-2401 or (315) 386-8111 through the weekend. By Monday, the Cooperative Extension office is expected to be open. That phone numbers is (315) 379-9192.

Also needed are experienced farmhands. To give the farmers a break, those with experience performing chores on dairy farms are asked to volunteer by calling FarmNet at 1-800-547-FARM.

Also, large stand-alone generators are still needed in the North Country. Those who have a generator to lend or sell, please call the Federal Emergency Management Agency office in Albany at (518) 458-2913, extension 302.

Dairy farmers who may need information, consultation and other help in analyzing their farm business situation as a result of the recent winter storm in northern New York state can call NY FarmNet at 1-800-547-FARM. This confidential, toll-free service is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. NY FarmNet is funded by the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets.

State University of New York (SUNY) officials have reported that six of its campuses in the region lost electric power and telephone service during the recent storm. Students who attend SUNY campuses at Canton, Plattsburgh, Clinton Community College, Jefferson Community College and North Country Community College can get information on the status of those campuses for the spring 1998 semester by calling toll-free at 1-888-293-0260.
