Zalaznick teaching assistantships awarded for 2005-06 year

Six Cornell University professors have received monetary awards from the Louis H. Zalaznick Teaching Assistantship program, administered by Cornell's universitywide Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise (EPE) Program.

The assistantships were established in 1993 by David Zalaznick '76, a current Cornell trustee, and his wife, Barbara '76. They allow faculty members affiliated with the EPE Program to extend their capacity to work with students by providing an assistant(s) to help with their courses and/or course development.

"We wanted to provide more opportunities for entrepreneurship students to engage one-on-one with faculty," David Zalaznick said. "It is a great pleasure to see so many faculty taking advantage of this program to assist their students. My wife, Barbara, and I gave this award in honor of my father, Louis Zalaznick, who is delighted that entrepreneurship education is thriving on the Cornell campus."

The following faculty members were honored with Zalaznick teaching awards this year:

  • David BenDaniel, the Don and Margi Berens Professor of Entrepreneurship, Johnson Graduate School of Management. The $2,500 award will be used to fund a teaching assistant for the course Advanced Private Equity. This course is taught mainly through videoconferencing and video streaming by Joseph Bartlett, courtesy lecturer of entrepreneurship, from the New York City office of Fish & Richardson P.C.
  • John Callister, the Harvey Kinzelberg Director of Entrepreneurship in Engineering, College of Engineering. Callister will use his $2,500 award to hire an MBA student to assist with his class, Entrepreneurship for Engineers.
  • Stuart L. Hart, the Samuel C. Johnson Professor of Sustainable Global Enterprise, Johnson Graduate School of Management. The $2,500 will be used for a teaching assistant to work with Jonathan Greene, director of the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at the Johnson School, to develop a curriculum for a graduate immersion in Sustainable Global Enterprise; coordinate academic and research efforts across the campus focused on sustainability; and help to engage undergraduates in the sustainability dialogue.
  • Pedro Perez, Department of Applied Economics and Management, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Perez will use the $5,000 award for teaching assistants for his classes Foundations of Entrepreneurship and Business, and Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise Speaker Series.
  • Deborah Streeter, the Bruce F. Failing Sr. Professor of Personal Enterprise and Small Business Management in the Department of Applied Economics and Management. Streeter received a $5,000 award to hire two teaching assistants. One will work with senior lecturer Marge Hubbert in her course, Enterpreneurship and Small Business Management, in the fall. The assistant will mentor student teams and serve as a liaison to business owners. The other assistant will work with Streeter in her course Small Business Management Workshop in the spring.
  • Wesley Sine, Johnson Graduate School of Management. Sine's $7,500 award will be used to employ teaching assistants to support his class Management of Innovation and Technology and to help develop two new classes, Commercializing University Science, and High Technology and Technology Commercialization.
