Get a flu shot, Cornell physicians suggest

Gannett Health Services at Cornell recommends that students, faculty and staff get flu shots as soon as possible if they have not yet done so. The recommendation comes after a health alert this past weekend from the Centers for Disease Control warning that the predominant strain of the virus causing this year's seasonal influenza has developed resistance to certain antiviral drugs.

"The best ways to protect yourself from influenza are vaccination and careful hygiene," said Janet Corson-Rikert, M.D., executive director of Gannett Health Services. Flu vaccines take roughly two weeks to be fully effective.

While a delay in vaccine shipments caused Gannett to cancel some flu vaccination clinics prior to winter break, recent shipments have brought in 600 doses, with more readily available.

To schedule a vaccination, call (607) 255-5155. For more information, see http://www.gannett.cornell.edu.
