Volunteers needed for Cornell opening day, Aug.18

On Friday, Aug. 18, more than 3,000 new undergraduate students will arrive on campus to begin their Cornell careers. To make each student's first day on campus a positive and memorable one, faculty and staff assistance is needed to welcome and direct these new students and their families as they move around campus and complete registration requirements. Help also is needed with registration of new graduate students Monday, Aug. 21.

There are several types of positions available so that volunteers can be matched with a task that fits their talents. A two-hour minimum commitment is required with options to volunteer up to a full day. Volunteers find this experience rewarding, and many participate annually.

Supervisory approval is needed for volunteer hours that coincide with scheduled work hours as they will be considered paid release time; if volunteer hours fall outside of scheduled work hours, they will be without pay.

Opening day launches an important chapter in each new student's life and academic career. To participate, sign up at http://registrar.sas.cornell.edu/openingday.html. For additional information, contact Rosemary Lang, rjl3@cornell.edu, 255-9602, or Lisa K'Bedford, lmk2@cornell.edu, 254-2255.
