Cornell faculty to reflect on 9/11 terror attacks at commemorative forum

It has been said that the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, altered the course of U.S. history. Exactly five years later -- on Sept. 11, 2006 -- Cornell faculty members will offer relevant perspectives to this tragedy in a special commemorative forum, "9/11 Then and Now: Reflections on Culture and Conflict." The forum will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Kennedy Hall's Call Alumni Auditorium on campus. It is free and open to the public.

Cornell President David Skorton will introduce participating faculty members and serve as moderator. The 90-minute event will begin with reflections about 9/11 by two Cornell foreign relations experts: Walter LaFeber, professor emeritus of American history, and Henry Shue, professor of ethics and public life.

"Sept. 11, 2001, was a pivotal moment in world history. Commemorating the fifth anniversary of this tragedy and focusing our collective attention on its implications is essential if we are to learn from the experience," said Skorton. "Recalling the loss will be painful, but it is important for us all to reflect upon the events and circumstances that led to that day."

Observations about the 9/11 attacks will be provided by: David S. Powers, professor of Near Eastern studies, "Why America Needs to Understand Islam"; Shelley Feldman, professor of development sociology, "Fear and Loathing: How Militarization Is Reshaping Everyday Life"; Kaushik Basu, professor of economics, "Violence and Globalization: A South Asian Perspective"; and Eric Tagliacozzo, assistant professor of history, "9/11, Five Years Later -- Five Conversations."

Bonnie McEneaney '78, widow of Cornell alumnus Eamon McEneaney '77, who died in the World Trade Center attacks, also will share her reflections and comments.

From 5 to 5:30 p.m., an information fair for students interested in study abroad, international study and opportunities for international service will be held at the event.

A candlelight vigil will follow the forum, proceeding from Cornell's Ag Quad to Ho Plaza.
