Visiting labor leader to discuss 21st century labor movements

Anna Burger, a prominent labor official with the Change to Win Federation, will discuss the future of American labor Friday, Sept. 29, in a special address at Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations' (ILR) 2006 Fall Convocation.

Burger's talk, "Change to Win: Building a 21st Century Labor Movement," will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Ives Hall, Room 105, on the Cornell campus. The address is free and open to the public.

Burger is chair of the Change to Win Federation, a year-old labor organization with 6 million members founded by seven major unions that split from the AFL-CIO. Burger also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

"Anna Burger is an innovative union leader who has been at the forefront of the strategic debate on labor's future," said Richard Hurd, professor of labor studies in the ILR School. "We are extremely fortunate to have her visit campus and look forward to hearing her assessment of Change to Win's accomplishments in its first year."

The seven unions affiliated with Change to Win Federation are SEIU, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, UNITE-HERE and the Laborers, the Carpenters and the United Farm Workers unions.
