Mu Gamma chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. celebrates 30th anniversary Sept. 16 at Cornell

Ithaca's Mu Gamma chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will have a public dedication ceremony of a sitting stone to recognize students of color, particularly women, and to commemorate the chapter's 30th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Cornell. Delta Sigma Theta is a black national sorority founded by 22 collegiate women in 1913 at Howard University. The sorority promotes sisterhood, scholarship and emphasizes public service.

The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. in front of Ujamaa Residential College on campus. The program will highlight the achievements of Mu Gamma chapter, which was established in 1975 at Ithaca College and later expanded to include women at Cornell. The ceremony will include a historical portrait by current chapter members, a keynote address by a Mu Gamma alumna, poetry, a candle-lighting ceremony and a reception.

Among other activities, the Mu Gamma chapter annually volunteers with the Breast Cancer Walk-a-thon and the AIDS Ride for Life. In August, Mu Gamma was named the National Collegiate Chapter of the Year and the New York Upstate Collegiate Chapter of the Year at the sorority's 48th national convention.
