Meinig Family Cornell National Scholars recognizes excellence in leadership

The Meinig Family Cornell National Scholars has announced its Excellence in Leadership Awards recognizing nine of its students for their exceptionally strong and successful leadership. The recipients from this past academic year were:

Samara Fetto '06: Transformed her sorority through a revitalized community outreach, $40,000 in charitable contributions, the creation of an alumni advisory board and the development of a faculty fellows program for the sorority.

Charlie Gibbons '06 (honorable mention): Managed a $150,000 budget for his fraternity while creating a sustainable financial system and developing a new recruitment strategy. His chapter's international headquarters has adopted many of his ideas into the national strategy, naming it "The Cornell Plan."

Kevin Hwang '07: Founded the journal The Triple Helix, which now involves hundreds of students at 27 universities in six countries. He is now planning a national conference for the journal.

Luke Hogle '07 (honorable mention): As a member of varsity wrestling team, worked with the team's annual Hospicare fund-raiser, the Student Athlete Advisory Council and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Nathan Skelley '07 (honorable mention): Recognized for his work with the Pre-Professional Association Toward Careers in Health's leadership team and for raising over $1,500 to support people affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Lisa Antonecchia '08: Manages her sorority's compliance efforts and serves as president of Applied Economics and Management Ambassadors, which supports the department and its Undergraduate Business Program, where she has made great strides in helping to build what was a fledgling, young organization.

Laura McIntyre '08 (honorable mention): As president of the Society for Natural Resources Conservation, spearheaded the Green Accounts Pilot Project, a project designed to encourage Cornell departments to purchase sustainable office supplies by providing information and financial support.

Aaron Sherbany '08: Made notable contributions and served as co-editor to ASSOCIATION, a student publication for the College of Architecture, Art and Planning. He also created a Web site to encourage dialogue between readers and contributors.

Joran Sequeira '09: Worked with the Cornell Elderly Partnership and became its publicity chair this past spring, spearheading the creation of a newsletter for the organization's weekly activities. She was also instrumental in starting a new all-female a cappella group, The CallbaXX, for which she serves as secretary.
