New Cornell disabilities initiative coordinator will address access issues

Cornell has appointed its first Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator for facilities, Andrea Haenlin-Mott. She will work with Cornell's Student Disability Services and the Office of Workforce Diversity, Equity and Life Quality on all access issues on campus for students, employees and visitors.

Before assuming her new post Oct. 9, Haenlin-Mott was project director for the Northeast Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center at Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations' Employment and Disability Institute.

The university has also launched an informational Web site on disabilities for faculty, staff and students. The new Web page at http://www.cornell.edu/disability/ includes information about accessibility, disability policies and the many services available to employees and students.

"Our new Web page is an excellent tool for sharing information about what Cornell is doing to address disability issues, and it includes a map that shows the locations of handicap parking and of accessible entrances to the university's buildings," said Lynette Chappell-Williams, director of Cornell's Office of Workforce Diversity, Equity and Life Quality. "The next step is to develop a comprehensive plan to address accessibility in terms of employment, educational programs, emergency evacuation, technology, campus access and other aspects of interest to individuals with disabilities."
