Dorothy Cotton, close associate of the late Martin Luther King Jr., to give annual commemorative address, Feb. 20

Dorothy Cotton, civil rights activist, motivational speaker and former Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) education director, will deliver the 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture at Cornell, Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 4:45 p.m. in Sage Chapel. Her lecture, "Lessons From the Past, Visions for the Future," is free and open to the public.

Cotton, a resident of Ithaca, served as SCLC's education director for 12 years under the direct supervision of King and also served on King's executive staff. She was part of his entourage to Oslo, Norway, where he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Cotton also served as vice president for field operations for the King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta. Later, she served as Cornell's director of student activities for nine years.

Parking for the annual King Commemorative Lecture, which is sponsored by numerous campus organizations, will be available in the Hoy Field garage on campus, beginning at 4:15 p.m. For more information about Cotton, see http://www.dorothycotton.com.

TCAT offers free transport to lecture

Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) will provide free bus service to and from the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture Feb. 20. Bus routes and stops and the program:

Before:

Route No. 13 will pick up passengers at GIAC, 318 N. Albany St., at 4 p.m. Passengers will transfer to the No. 30 bus at the Green St. bus stop near the Tompkins County Library and will be dropped off at the Statler Hotel at Cornell. A TCAT supervisor at the Green Street stop will coordinate bus transfers.

Route No. 15 will pick up passengers at the Southside Community Center, 305 S. Plain St., at 3:55 p.m., and proceed to the Green Street bus stop; again, passengers will transfer to the No. 30 bus to the Statler.

After:

The return trip will begin at the Sage Hall bus stop, which is across East Avenue from the Statler bus stop. Passengers can take the No. 30 bus or the No. 10 bus that runs every 10 minutes down to the bus stop at the corner of Seneca and Tioga streets to catch either bus No. 13 or No. 15 for the return ride to GIAC and Lifelong, or Southside, respectively. Again, a TCAT supervisor will be on hand to help coordinate.
