Art journal granted $100,000 from Warhol Foundation

Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, a magazine edited and published at Cornell, has received a $100,000 grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The foundation will invest $3 million over three years to support independent, progressive arts publications and arts writers by rewarding critical writing about art that is intellectually rigorous and creatively generative.

"The Andy Warhol Foundation has been on the cutting edge of funding innovative work in the arts, and the new initiative on arts writing is important at a time when most art magazines have gone commercial and have no interest in serious art criticism," said Salah M. Hassan, director of the Africana Studies and Research Center. "We are most proud that Nka is selected for its 'ambition, commitment and strong editorial vision.' This will help us continue to take creative risks and continue to produce intellectually committed work."

Since its first publication in 1994, Nka has played a significant role in contemporary African and African Diaspora art. To view the current issue of Nka or to subscribe, visit http://www.asrc.cornell.edu/Nka/20.html.
