Students support renewable energy referendum in assembly elections

At its meeting March 8, Cornell's Student Assembly (SA) announced the results of the 2007 election to choose a new slate of student representatives. A majority of the 2,279 undergraduate voters showed support for referendums on a community center in Collegetown and on using student activity fees to fund renewable energy and a legal downloading service.

The referendum questions and results were:

The energy referendum stated that funds collected would go toward purchasing and developing renewable energy for Cornell through the Kyoto Task Team, a university committee of students, staff and faculty. Cornell's KyotoNow! was the first chapter formed in the student movement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on campuses nationwide.

The referendums were the first put to students in several years.

"We felt that this was a great way to gauge support of the general student body on their thoughts about certain issues," said C.J. Slicklen '09, SA vice president for public relations, who also was elected to represent students in the School of Hotel Administration.

While not binding, the results will be taken into consideration when next year's assembly completes by-line funding to determine the Student Activity Fee for 2008-09, Slicklen said.

Current SA members end their terms June 1. The new representatives for 2007-08 will be inaugurated in August. The SA includes three student representatives each from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; two from the College of Engineering; one each from Architecture, Art and Planning, Hotel Administration, Human Ecology and Industrial and Labor Relations; and 11 liaisons-at-large, including designated representatives for minority, international and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (LGBTQ) students. There were no candidates for Human Ecology representative; the vacant seat will be filled after a special election in the fall.

Students also elected two representatives to the University Assembly. Two additional student seats on the UA remain vacant.
