Asia Night 2007: Celebrating cultures with food and entertainment

Showcasing 36 student organizations of Asian heritage, Asia Night 2007 featured Thai and Indian cuisine and live entertainment, April 28, in Barton Hall. Organized by the Cornell Asian Pacific-Islander Students Union, the multicultural event brought together a wide range of Asian groups to present the best of their countries.

Entertainment included performances from the Amber Dance Troupe, Illuminations, Taiko, Boo Chae Choom (Korean Fan Dance) and videos from Operation D.E.E.P to raise cultural awareness. The show also included humorous skits that commented on the issues Asians face in America, as well as musical performances by an eclectic mix of Asian musicians.

After receiving "passports" at the door, attendees could visit various booths and participate in interactive activities sponsored by the different Asian organizations. For instance, at the table sponsored by Project Hope, which works to build schools in China, people practiced picking up rice and marshmallows with chopsticks. After each activity, participants received a stamp on their passports, and fully stamped passports were exchanged for raffle tickets to win a $1,000 plasma TV.

Asia Night serves as a cultural learning tool for the diverse student body at Cornell. The various Asian organizations on campus come together in the effort to close the gap between their various cultures and help Cornell students better understand Asian cultures.
