CU publications win five awards in CASE 2007 competition

Three departments in Cornell's Division of University Communications garnered five medals in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) 2007 competition that covers the 2006 calendar year. They were Cornell Publications and Marketing, University Photography and the Cornell Chronicle.

"These awards show, yet again, the high quality and commitment of the University Communications staff in promoting Cornell and, in particular, the launch of our capital campaign. I am immensely proud of them all," said Tommy Bruce, vice president for university communications.

Cornell Publications and Marketing received both a gold and silver medal.

The "Cornell is ..." book (fondly referred to as "the C book") was awarded a gold medal in the individual fund-raising publications category, in which 228 entries were judged. "Cornell is ... ," presented in an elegant red linen slipcase, is a book of Cornell photographs showing the best of the university. Publications and Marketing staff members who worked on the piece were Wendy Kenigsberg (designer), Liz Bauman (editor) and writers Roger Segelken, Carole Stone, Claudia Wheatley and Jo Ann Wimer.

The "Far Above ... The Campaign for Cornell" package received a silver award in the fund-raising publications packages category, which received 60 entries. Cornell's entry contained the seven capital campaign information folders, which include a Campaign Case Statement in words, a Campaign Case Statement in photos and a DVD showcasing the images from the "Cornell is ..." book. Staff members who worked on the piece were Kenigsberg (designer), Clive Howard (art director), Wheatley (writer) and editors Jeri Wall and Wimer. The DVD was produced by Seven Three Media and Tracy Vosburgh, Cornell's director of Multimedia Development and Production.

"Both the gold and silver awards include many thanks from us to the staffs of University Photography and Graphics Purchasing," said Sally Dutko, director of Publications and Marketing.

University Photography was awarded a silver and bronze medal in the individual photograph category, which received 78 entries and awarded two gold medals, two silvers and four bronze medals.

Director Robert Barker received a silver medal for a photo of a student in front of a blackboard, which was used as one of the covers of the "Far Above ... The Campaign for Cornell" package. Matt Fondeur was awarded a bronze medal for his panoramic photo of the Cornell Plantations, which was used as a wrap-around cover for The Plantations' annual report.

"Photographs are judged by the strength of the image and its use," Barker said. "We owe thanks to Publications and Marketing's designers for wrapping our photographs in beautifully designed pieces."

The print Cornell Chronicle was awarded a CASE silver medal in the print internal audience tabloids and newsletters category. Thirty-three entries were judged, and one gold, two silvers and two bronze medals were awarded. Joe Wilensky is the Chronicle's managing editor; Robin Zifchock is the Chronicle's graphic designer.

"This award is not only recognition of Robin's terrific designs for the Chronicle, but also of Joe Wilensky's and the Chronicle staff's talent and energy in constantly improving the level of the Chronicle's content," said David Brand, director of the Chronicle.
