Six alumni receive Rhodes awards

Six Cornell alumni have received Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Awards recognizing their outstanding long-term service as Cornell volunteers within the broad spectrum of the university's various alumni organizations.

The 2007 recipients are: Michael W.N. Chiu '66, Glenn T. Dallas '58, Robert B. Goldfarb '64, Barbara Hirsch Kaplan '59, Grace E. Richardson, M.S. '62, and W. Barlow Ware '47.

The following profiles were excerpted from the recognition program.

Michael W.N. Chiu:

A member of the Cornell University Council's International Programs Committee, Chiu has helped Cornell enhance its ability to offer scholarships; contributed to the establishment of Ho Plaza; and helped launch the China and Asia-Pacific Studies program and the hospitality management program with Singapore's Nanyang Technological University's Business School. A presidential councilor and trustee emeritus who co-chaired the Class of 1966's 35th reunion, Chiu was recognized by Cornell as Hotelier of the Year in March 2007.

Glenn T. Dallas:

Dallas has worked for many years for his class, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), Cornell Annual Fund, the Undergraduate Business Program and Cornell Plantations. He helped reshape the roles of regional directors and board members in the CALS Alumni Association, which helped make it one of the country's most active Cornell alumni organizations; he co-chaired the Class of 1958's 25th through 50th Reunion Campaign Participation Committees, is a life member of Cornell's Council and serves as the Cornell Annual Fund representative for his class and the Tower Club chair of the Cornell Club of Sarasota-Manatee.

Robert B. Goldfarb:

Goldfarb has served three terms on Cornell's Council and led numerous committees, with special interest in undergraduate admissions and financial aid. He has served and chaired the College of Arts and Sciences' advisory council and its campaign committee and served as a class council member, Cornell Annual Fund representative and Major Gifts Committee co-chair for the Class of 1964's 25th and 30th reunion campaigns. During Cornell's last campaign he led committees for major gifts, special gifts and student aid and is active in the Cornell Club of Greater Hartford and the Real Estate Council.

Barbara Hirsch Kaplan:

Kaplan has long been a leader in recruiting and fundraising on behalf of the Class of '59, playing a pivotal role for her 25th reunion when she edited her reunion yearbook. She has been instrumental in all the reunion campaigns, serving as class president. She has co-chaired the outstanding CU in Philadelphia program and served the Cornell Council for three terms and is now a life member.

Grace E. Richardson:

Also a life member of the Cornell Council, Richardson has served as vice chair of its administrative board and chair of its Nominating and Public Relations Committees. For the College of Human Ecology, she has served on the Dean's Advisory Council, Alumni Association Board of Directors and worked in several fundraising roles. She also has served on the New York City and New York State Advisory Councils for Cooperative Extension, was vice chair of the Cornell Club-New York and is a member of the President's Council of Cornell Women.

W. Barlow Ware:

Ware has served as the Quill and Dagger historian for 30 years and has lent his expertise to the Glee Club Advisory Council and the Plantations Advisory Board and has served the Class of 1947 as secretary, correspondent, vice president and campaign committee member. He provided commentary for hundreds of Big Red hockey games in the 1970s and '80s and football games from the '70s into the '90s. In 2003, he was inducted into the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame.
