One more victory will pave way to NCAA tourney for women's basketball

The Cornell women's basketball team continued to make history March 8, winning a share of its first-ever Ivy League title as it defeated Princeton, 76-59, at Newman Arena. Fittingly enough, Jeomi Maduka '09, who registered her 1,000th career point during the game, led the Big Red with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Lauren Benson '10 scored 13 points and handed out seven assists to break the school record for assists in a single season.

On March 10, the team had some luck fall its way, as it won the random draw to earn a bye into the Ivy League championship game that will be held March 16 at 2 p.m. Cornell will face the winner of the March 14 Harvard-Dartmouth game. Both games will be held at Columbia University's Levien Gymnasium.

The winner of Sunday's game will be the Ivy League's automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.

With the March 8 win, Cornell improved to 19-8 overall and 11-3 in the conference to earn a three-way split of the conference title. In addition to Maduka and Benson's efforts, Allie Fedorowicz '10 finished the night with 14 points, while Gretchen Greg '08 chipped in 10.

Cornell's athletics department will be providing a bus to take fans to New York City to watch the Big Red in the March 16 championship game.

The bus will leave from Bartels Hall promptly at 8:30 a.m. and will return immediately following the game. Space is limited to 47 seats, and tickets will be sold through the Cornell Ticket Office on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $40 roundtrip and includes a ticket to the game.

The Big Red will be playing in the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament on either Thursday, March 20 or Friday, March 21. Cornell's seed and the regional in which the team will play will be announced on "Selection Sunday," March 16 as part of the NCAA Selection Show on CBS at 6 p.m. Watch the Cornell Athletics Web site at http://www.cornellbigred.com for tournament and ticket information.
