Cochran wins Levenson Prize in Chinese Studies

Sherman Cochran, the Hu Shih Professor of Chinese History in the Department of History at Cornell, has been awarded the annual Joseph Levenson Prize in Chinese Studies (post-1900 category) for his book, "Chinese Medicine Men: Consumer Culture in China and Southeast Asia" (Harvard University Press, 2006).

The award was announced April 4 at the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Every year, the AAS China and Inner Asia Council awards two Levenson Prizes to the English-language books that make the greatest contribution to increasing understanding of the history, culture, society, politics or economy of China.

Cochran's other books include "Encountering Chinese Networks: Western, Japanese, and Chinese Corporations in China, 1880-1937" (2000) and "Cities in Motion: Interior, Coast and Diaspora in Transnational China," which he co-edited with David Strand (2007).
