Homer 'Skip' Meade '69, of Willard Straight takeover fame, receives UMass alumni honor

W.E.B. DuBois scholar and Cornell alumnus Homer "Skip" Meade was among 10 alumni of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst honored during the celebration of that school's graduate school centennial.

During the celebration April 9, Meade gave a talk titled "The University's Archives: Inspiration from Days Gone By" and shared insights on the life and work of DuBois, who he researched at the UMass Amherst libraries while working on his doctoral dissertation.

Meade graduated from Cornell in 1969 with a degree in philosophy. He also holds two graduate degrees from UMass Amherst. Meade was one of the black students who took over Willard Straight Hall in 1969 to protest the school's lack of an Africana studies program.
