Cornell and New York Public Library launch partnership

In a partnership that will build on the resources of two of New York City's largest educational and cultural institutions to educate city residents, Cornell and the New York Public Library (NYPL) this month joined forces to create Cornell@NYPL.

To inaugurate Cornell@NYPL, Cornell faculty and New York City cooperative extension experts will participate in health, nutrition, financial literacy and 4-H youth programs at various library branches and locations in New York City. Food and nutrition programs will discuss food selection and preparation, budget and safety issues; other workshops will offer strategies to lower energy bills and improve energy efficiency. Library branches will also host financial literacy programs.

"As New York state's land-grant university, Cornell's knowledge-sharing and public outreach mission complements that of the New York Public Library, one of the most distinguished New York institutions," said Brenda Tobias, director of Cornell's New York City Communications office. NYPL is one of the largest public library systems in the United States and one of the largest research library systems in the world.

Cornell@NYPL programming will focus on disseminating practical information, and future plans call for cultural exchanges. The groundwork was laid on June 8 for such exchanges when Josh Abraham, Miles Brown, Robert Cowie, Kevin Lowe and Paul Merrill -- members of the Cornell Jazz Ensemble -- performed the "Music of Benny Goodman" at the NYPL for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. The concert, a celebration of Goodman's centennial, played to an over-capacity crowd.

"The New York Public Library is thrilled to form an ongoing partnership with Cornell University," said Elaine Charnov, the library's director of education, programming and exhibitions. "The New York Public Library seeks to engage and enrich the lives of New Yorkers through programs at its branch libraries across Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. The Cornell offerings on such critical, practical issues as health and nutrition, energy savings and financial literacy will bring the university's academic excellence to the diverse communities of New York."
