Workday – the new cloud-based human resources and payroll system – goes live March 21. The new system will permit faculty and staff to manage their personal information online.

Employees can use Workday to view and update their address and emergency contacts, review their benefits and time-off balances, view their paycheck details, and (for exempt employees) record time away from work. It will replace Employee Essentials and LARS (Leave Accrual and Reporting System), among other systems.

Employees can find online tutorials about how to view personal, compensation, benefits and payroll information by visiting http://workday.cornell.edu/training/for-employees/.

Supervisors will have the opportunity to attend training conducted in partnership with their college or unit. For online tutorials on how to view data and approve time-off requests, visit http://workday.cornell.edu/training/for-managers.

Additional learning opportunities will be available via open forums, online tutorials and in-person trainings this spring. Find demonstrations and general information, including online tutorials and job aids, at http://www.workday.cornell.edu.

Throughout 2012, hundreds of campus personnel participated in training and information sessions on the Workday system through hands-on instructor-led sessions, tutorials, open labs/forums and reference guides. They provided useful feedback, leaders said.

“The Workday training team had conversations with colleagues in colleges and units across campus regarding their readiness for go-live and what they needed for support,” said Lyman Flahive, senior director of human resource information services. “Training for staff became a major component of these discussions. For the past several weeks, our team has worked hard to train the system’s users who have human resources and payroll responsibilities, and is now focused on delivering training to managers and other audiences.”

Access in Workday is determined by one’s role(s). Most Workday users will have the employee role, which enables them to view and make changes to their own information. The manager role is also a view-only role given to those with direct reports such as supervisors, directors and managers.

“A large part of our training effort has been to prepare campus to most effectively use the system in whatever role(s) they are assigned,” Flahive said. “Workday training has been customized to fit an individual’s assigned role or roles.”
