University revokes recognition of Chi Psi fraternity

On May 2, Vice President for University Relations Joel Malina issued the following statement to the Cornell community:

Effective immediately, Cornell University recognition is revoked for the Chi Psi fraternity for a period of no less than three years, as a result of incidents that occurred during the Spring 2014 semester involving hazing. The fraternity was placed on provisional recognition status, a probationary status, in June 2013, and on interim suspension status, a pause in chapter operations, in March 2014.  The chapter may appeal the decision in writing within 48 hours.

The chapter facility will be closed at the end of the spring semester. In accordance with the recognition policy, no chapter may take advantage of the benefits of recognition – including the recruitment of new members – without university recognition.
