Cornell University Police (CUPD) is seeking the public’s help in gathering information related to a suspicious device that was removed from campus today by the Endicott Bomb Squad.

A CUPD officer was approached at 2:07 p.m. by a Cornell employee who reported a suspicious package located outdoors along Sciences Drive between Clark and Bailey halls. The bomb squad was called after CUPD inspected the area and determined the package to be a potentially dangerous device.

The area was immediately secured and an alert was distributed to the campus community informing the public that portions of the following buildings were being evacuated: Space Sciences, Clark Hall, Bailey Hall, Savage Hall, Kinzelberg Hall, Newman Lab and Baker Lab.

The bomb squad safely removed the device at 5:35 p.m. No other information is available regarding the device, which is being analyzed at a bomb squad laboratory.

Also responding to the scene was the Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance.

CUPD is investigating the incident and is seeking leads from the public. Anyone who has witnessed suspicious activity or has information regarding the device is asked to call 607-255-1111.

On April 14, the Endicott Bomb Squad was called to campus to remove a small explosive placed in a cylinder less than 3 inches long and about three-quarters of an inch in diameter, requiring a heat source to activate. Investigators did not find the incident to be malicious in nature and have no reason to believe at this time that the two incidents are related. Additional details about the April 14 incident remain unavailable as the investigation continues.
