Apply for grants to internationalize Cornell courses

Proposals for 2016 Internationalizing the Cornell Curriculum Grants from the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs are due Feb. 8, 2016.

“The goal of the ICC grant program is to support innovative faculty-led initiatives that will expand opportunities for international experiences by Cornell students,” says David R. Lee, provost’s fellow for internationalization and International Professor in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Managementin the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

There are many ways this can be accomplished, according to Lee, through expanding on-campus course offerings, integrating international learning experiences into new and existing courses, enhancing language study and study abroad opportunities, and otherwise engaging students in high-impact global learning.

“We want to encourage the creativity and innovation of Cornell faculty in a way that benefits students,” he says.

In 2015, 26 faculty-led projects were awarded ICC grants. Successful proposals involve faculty and students across Cornell colleges and schools who are working on projects worldwide.

Pre-proposal workshops will be offered Dec. 2, 8 and 10 for faculty interested in submitting proposals. Participation in a workshop is highly recommended, particularly for those with little experience in submitting grant proposals or designing an international program or international component to their courses.

Faculty who receive grant awards are encouraged to participate in an ICC learning community, project development working sessions and other workshops provided in collaboration with the Center for Teaching Excellence, Cornell Abroad, Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, Engaged Learning + Research, and the Language Resource Center.

Following are examples of projects that received 2015 ICC grants:

  • Case Study Experiences in Renewable Energy (Paulette Clancy, chemical engineering; Julie Nucci, materials science and engineering), a joint Cornell-India initiative through which undergraduate students from engineering courses in thermodynamics visit urban and rural educational institutions in India to participate in hands-on low-cost energy generation projects.
  • History, Politics and Social Engagement in Southern Africa (Muna Ndulo, law), a three-credit, four-week summer course to give students an opportunity to study, learn and exchange ideas about the historical, cultural and political life of South Africa and to work on selected projects with Zambian students.
  • China/Cornell Media Arts Exchange (Jumay Chu, Amy Villarejo, both performing and media arts), a partnership with Xian Academy of Fine Arts, in which Cornell students will collaborate with visiting Chinese artists, dancers, performance artists and students on the Ithaca campus, and also engage in a summer session in China wherein they produce original works of media and movement that reflect the cultural, ecological, social and sensorial dimensions of their home and host countries.
  • Ecology and Conservation of Wildlife in the Neotropics (Irby Lovette and Leonardo Campagna, both ecology and evolutionary biology), an undergraduate seminar with a field research in Patagonia, Argentina, through which students will gain an integrated understanding of neotropical ecology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation biology, and the practical skillsets to frame and answer questions on conservation issues in varied social, economic and cultural settings.

Internationalizing the Cornell Curriculum grants, provided through the Global Cornell Initiative, are administered jointly by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs, the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and Cornell Abroad, with support from the Internationalization Council.
