University revokes recognition of Psi Upsilon fraternity
On May 25, 2016, Psi Upsilon fraternity had its recognition revoked for a period of no less than three years. Following the appeals process, Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi reduced the revocation to no less than 1.5 years in a decision announced June 24. The following statement has been updated to reflect that decision:
Effective immediately, Cornell University recognition is revoked for the Psi Upsilon fraternity for a period of no less than 1.5 years. This revocation of recognition is a result of of two recent incidents, including hosting a party on Slope Day, in blatant violation of the terms of Interim Suspension and of the order of a university official delivered to acting chapter leaders. The revocation of recognition is also a result of the chapter’s recent judicial history, which includes 31 alleged judicial complaints. The chapter house, located at 2 Forest Park Lane, must be vacated by all occupants by May 31, 2016. The chapter may appeal the decision in writing within 72 hours.
If Recognition is requested and approved at any point following the revocation period, the fraternity will remain on Provisional Recognition status for a period of no less than two calendar years.
Regarding the chapter’s role in the alleged incident of sexual misconduct that took place at the fraternity house on January 30-31, 2016, there was no information presented to the Board that demonstrates the chapter contributed to an atmosphere or circumstance that would facilitate sexual misconduct that night or otherwise responded inappropriately at the time the allegation was made.
In accordance with the recognition policy, no chapter may take advantage of the benefits of recognition — including the recruitment of new members — without university recognition.
