The Southeast Asia Program (SEAP) and Cornell University Press (CUP) have entered a new collaborative venture for the publication of high quality scholarship on Southeast Asia in books and in the journal Indonesia.

The program’s publishing arm, SEAP Publications, will become an imprint of CUP as a result. The Press will leverage digital publishing technologies to maximize exposure for the publications, and for the first time, readers worldwide will be able to access SEAP titles in digital form.

In a statement, SEAP Director Kaja M. McGowan cited Tamara Loos, associate professor of history and Asian studies, “for helping to bring this exciting opportunity to fruition,” along with CUP’s director, Dean John Smith, for “generous engagement from the get-go.”

“To position this scholarship more prominently, this formal transition … promises higher visibility and the potential to continue to uphold and strengthen our reputation for publishing groundbreaking scholarship on Southeast Asia,” said McGowan, an associate professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences.

SEAP Publications’ mission is to make a wide variety of scholarly and language texts available, at the lowest possible cost, to an interested international clientele that includes academics, business leaders, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and organizations.

Cornell Press will serve that mission by incorporating SEAP titles into its copyediting, book design, e-book creation, on-demand printing, marketing and distribution workflows, enabling SEAP Publications staff to focus on acquiring quality manuscripts and peer-reviewed articles for the journal. SEAP titles will carry the Cornell Press logo and be distributed along with other CUP books.

“This collaboration will enhance our profile in Asian studies and fulfill our mission of publishing scholarship that is engaged, influential, and of lasting significance,” Smith said.

SEAP Publications books are divided into four main series, and include substantial scholarly books, essay collections, language texts and monographs in the humanities and social sciences.

“Together, SEAP Publications and CUP will promote and publish more authors and their quality scholarship on Southeast Asia,” said SEAP Managing Editor Sarah Grossman, who welcomes inquiries and manuscript submissions for the collaborative imprint at SEAP-Pubs@cornell.edu.
