Andy Noel, Cornell University’s Meakem♦Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, announced Dec. 7 that rowing alumnus Bob Clark ’51 has bequeathed $3 million to establish an endowed fund to support the Big Red heavyweight rowing program.

The Robert F. Clark Cornell Alumni Crew Fund will provide resources to cover operating expenses, including equipment, training, uniforms, travel, coaching, boathouse equipment repair and equipment transportation.

“Rowing meant so much to me,” said Clark. “It was one of the best times of my life. The team was great and I have been friends for life with my teammates. After having traveled all over the world to row, I wanted to give back. I’m going to make sure that my assets are going to go to something worthwhile and hopefully some other kid will have the same opportunity I did.”

A four-year member of the Cornell heavyweight rowing program, Clark returned to rowing on the Masters circuit at age 56, and has won 30 medals, including 27 gold, with 10 world championships to his credit.

When Clark arrived at Cornell, he had “never seen an oar before,” but went on to have a successful career under legendary head coach Stork Sanford, making the varsity eight crew as a senior. “I started out at the bottom of the barrel and the more I rowed, the more determined I was,” said Clark.

The gift is the largest single donation made to any of the Big Red rowing programs.

“The Cornell Rowing experience has allowed many young people to grow, not just athletically but as people,” says Todd Kennett ’91, the Spirit of ’57 Director of Rowing. “The tradition that makes Cornell Rowing so strong is still very alive and well. The gift from Bob Clark ’51 is another example of the impact that Cornell Rowing has had on someone’s life. In turn, he is helping make Cornell Rowing endure here on Cayuga’s waters. A gift of this size has huge impact, and on behalf of the entire Cornell Rowing community, I want to thank Mr. Clark.”
