Second alumna wounded in Arizona shooting
By George Lowery
Susan Hileman '73, a graduate of the College of Human Ecology, was shot three times by the gunman who also wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Jan. 8 in Tucson, Ariz. Six people were killed and 14 people were wounded in the shooting. Hileman is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
Hileman, known as Suzi, had brought her neighbor, 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, to visit Giffords, M.R.P. '97, who was meeting with her constituents at a grocery store parking lot. Green was killed. Giffords remains in critical condition.
"I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear that Suzi was among the victims of Saturday's shooting in Tucson, but am encouraged by reports that her condition is improving," said Alan Mathios, the Rebecca Q. and James C. Morgan Dean of the College of Human Ecology. "Having recently visited with Suzi -- a proud Cornellian and dedicated volunteer to the college and university -- her tremendous spirit and great resolve will no doubt aid in her recovery from this horrific tragedy. All of us in the college are thinking of Suzi and her family at this time."
Hileman is married to William Hileman '72, a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences. She is a retired social worker who maintains close ties to Cornell as chair and director of the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network for the Cornell Club of Southern Arizona and as a member of the Human Ecology Alumni Association Board. She also served on her class's 30th Reunion Campaign Major Gifts Committee (2002-03).
